Spurgeon F. Boyd, Union biologist, dies BRADFORD Servicesfor educator Spurgeon Frank Boyd, 71, former head of thebiology department at Union University, will be at 11 a.m.Thursday at Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Elliottand the Rev. Mike Burczynski officiating. Burial will be inProspect Prospect Cemetery near Hollow Rock. Mr. Boyd diedTuesday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphisafter a long illness. He graduated from Central High Schoolin Bruceton, and received his bachelor's degree fromCarson-Newman College in Jefferson City. He held themaster's degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville andhad done additional study at the University of Georgia,Arizona State University and University of Oregon. He alsowas a former professor of biology at Belmont College inNashville and at Memphis State University before hisretirement in 1978. He served in the 9th Division of theU.S. Marine Corps in World War II. Mr. Boyd was a member ofthe Tennessee Education Association, Retired Teachers'Association, American Institute of Science and the NationalWildlife Federation. He was a member of the TennesseeAcademy of Science, American Association for theAdvancement of Science, Association of UniversityProfessors, and Beta biological society. He was a lessonwriter for the children's division of the Baptist SundaySchool Board, and was a deacon and Sunday School teacher atFirst Baptist Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs Pauline Boydof Bradford; a daughter, Mrs. Don Steen of Corinth, Miss.;a son. Dr. Thomas Boyd of Baldwin City, Kan.; a sister,Mrs. Frank Fristoe of Bruceton; and two grandchildren,Chris Boyd and Sally Steen.4
