W.L. Blakney
W.L. Blakney, 83, of 511 Poplar died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesdayin his home after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 11a.m. Thursday at Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Faith, Highway277. Dr. Chris Diebel, pastor of First Christian Church,will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.Born April 6. 1894, in Burnsville, Miss., he was a retireddistrict manager for Southwestern Bell. He started workwith Bell in 1920. He was manager at the office in Marshalluntil 1933. He had lived in Abilene since 1933. He marriedNell Rook in 1920 in Florence, Ala. She was a member ofFirst Christian Church. He was a first lieutenant in theArmy in World War I. He was a member of the American Legionand a 42-year member of the Abilene Rotary Club. SurvivorsInclude his wife; daughter, Nell Evans of Richardson; ason, Tom of Providence, R.I.; two sisters, Georgia Rushingand Bessie Dickinson Miss.; and five grandchildren.2 3 1
